Alexandra Neighbourhood House
For over 100 years, Alexandra Neighbourhood House has been fulfilling its mission to nurture healthy communities in South Surrey and White Rock by offering innovative and effective services to children, adults, seniors and families. Using a place-based, community-driven, organic approach to developing and delivering services, this model prioritizes the unique and diverse character of the communities served. We are guided by the principle that a healthy community is one in which all residents are empowered to connect and engage. Together with our partners, we co-create opportunities to gather, celebrate, and teach and learn from one another. These activities may have a general community appeal or be targeted towards specific groups that identify as marginalized or vulnerable. Examples include children's programs, community gardens, arts and culture events, activities aimed at reducing seniors' social isolation, and programs to facilitate the community integration of newcomer Canadians, among others.
With the evolving and growing social and economic effects of the global pandemic, Alexandra Neighbourhood House has expanded its engagement to respond to our community's new and evolving needs. Where possible, we have moved our programming online or adapted in-person programming to be safe, socially distanced and follow Covid-19 safety protocols. We have new activities intended to mitigate the increased social isolation of seniors and people with disabilities, to support individuals sheltering at home, and provide emergency relief to those in financial want and facing food insecurity. Feedback from participants and volunteers indicates that we are succeeding in reducing social isolation and enhancing community participation, especially on the part of those seeking greater integration. Donations and support allow existing programs to continue and help Alexandra Neighbourhood House create new community-driven programs that respond to the community's evolving needs.
